Seattle, Washington, June 2025

The Seattle Center, which was built for the World’s Fair in 1962, contains several attractions, three of which we visited with Susan’s sister Ann while she was with us: the Space Needle, the Chihuilly Glass House, and the Monorail. A couple days earlier, before Ann arrived, we also visited Pike Place Market and walked a small part of the new waterfront behind Pike Place Market.

The space needle was renovated in 2017 where they took out the revolving restaurant and replaced it with a revolving glass floor. The elevators are super fast and the views are of course phenominal. The Chihuly Glass House is filled with magnificent glass art by Dale Chihuly – absolutely breathtaking (look at the pictures below!). The Alweg Monorail is a short elevated tram that rides above the streets of Seattle between the Seattle Center and Westlake Center. Pike’s Place Market is at least 100 years old and is in the heart of downtown Seattle, covering nine acres. The new waterfront is between Pike’s Place and the water, running for several blocks north and south – great for strolling and the views are beautiful.

Adam, Susan and Ann on the upper observation deck of the Space Needle sitting on a glass bench and leaning back against the outside glass wall – trying not to cringe! Lake Union in the background.

If you are brave, go ahead and look down through the glass you are standing on – and that glass is moving as it rotates around the tower at about one revolution every 45 minutes.
There is a statue of a spider that is as large as a truck on the roof of the building below – you can see it near the top of this photo.
Our favorite display at the Chihuly Glass House – called “Mille Fiori”. This is the view of it as you enter the room. The red glass posts (flowers) are about 7 feet tall and the whole garden is about 60 feet long

“Ikebana and Float Boats”. These are about 15 feet wide each.
This is called “Persian Ceiling” at the Chihuly Glass House. It is literally the glass ceiling above you as you walk through this room. The colors are stunning.

After being lost in the market for awhile how “refreshing” to find a map located on the waterfront behind the market…
A view of the new Seattle waterfront – this photo was taken from the pedestrian bridge behind Pike Place Market. Note the Seattle Great Wheel in the right side background.
